Location: La Canalosa Elche < Elche area < Alicante - Costa Blanca < Spain Elche Elche has many places of interest. The Municipal park is situated in the centre of Elche, it is famous for having the highest amount of palm trees in the world. In the Municipal Park there is a Visitors Centre where visitors can learn more about the area. The park itself is 6 hectares and you can choose to ride on a tourist train or wander through, admiring the many palms and shrubs together with the dovecote, bandstand many fountains, sculptures and childrens play area. The Basilica of Santa Maria was built in 1672, and the architecture and stained glass windows are incredible. The performance of the Mystery of Elche is held here each August. The Bell Tower can be climbed to admire a panoramic view over the city and the palm groves. There are many museums including the Museum of Festivals which explains the story of the Mystery of Elche which is held in the Basilica. The Traditional Cultural Centre which has exhibitions of the local rural life and traditions. The Archaeological and History museum with many fossils found locally. Enjoy a tour of the remains of an arabian baths from the 12th century or a major Iberian archaeological site, where a statue the ‘Lady of Elche’ was found in 1897, together with copper and bronze pieces, sculptures and ceramics from Roman times. Visit the Huerta del Cura (Gardens of the Curate) with almost 1000 palm trees and other beautiful mediterranean and tropical plants and cacti to admire. The 165 year old Imperial Palm Tree is a most unique specimen which was named after the Empress Elizabeth of Austria when she visited the garden in 1894. If its retail therapy you require head for the L’Aljub shopping centre, with Zara, H&M and hundreds more boutiques and a food court on the second level together with bowling and a cinema.
